Legend of King Arthur Challenge: Character Design Winners Interview

character design challenge

The artists of our community were invited to create fan-arts or re-design a character from the Final Fantasy franchise. Our seventy-third Character Design Challenge started on the 7th of January 2021, the deadline was the 2nd of February 2021. The artists of our community were invited to create fan-arts or re-design a character from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth. Our seventy-seventh Character Design Challenge started on the 7th of May 2021, the deadline was the 2nd of June 2021. The artists of our community were invited to create fan-arts or re-design a character from Cowboy Bebop.

You Will Love These Too

Entries posted on Patreon can instead be updated or even replaced (the final version will be considered your official entry), but you will still be allowed to post once in the Facebook group. These artworks are considered ‘‘Perfect Entries’’ because they minimize their chances to get caught in any of the grey areas of the rules, increasing the chances to get approved and being potentially selected as winners. A ‘‘Perfect Entry’’ is by no means a better one, but it’s indeed a smarter way to participate in this contest and avoid annoying issues.

What was your overall concept for character designs?

There is, of course, just the fun of playing with character editing and features and seeing what you can develop. It can be quite addicting playing with all of the available parts and seeing what new characters may develop in the process. The deadline to submit your entry for the contest will be extended by 3 days (so combined with theme preview, this means that you will have 5 EXTRA DAYS each month to work on and submit your entry!).

Make sure to add the links to your website (and blog, Facebook page, online store, Patreon page, portfolio), in the caption or in the comment section of your own post. If you don’t have a blog, you can also share your email address or tell people they can contact you directly on your FB personal profile. Art students who wish to follow the monthly prompts of the community, should submit your work via Instagram by including the hashtag for the current challenge, and tagging the IG page of the community ( @characterdesignchallenge ) in your post. Just as for the classic Winners of the Character Design Challenge, the entries for the Challenge Rewards will be judged on both creative and technical skills, originality and outstanding draftsmanship. Even if your work wasn’t approved on the Facebook group, you can submit it on Instagram and Patreon. Artwork submitted on these platforms doesn’t need to meet our standard of draftsmanship, and works from beginner artists are more than welcome there.

Due to the large number of active members and the high amount of artwork submitted in the Character Design Challenge, we must ensure that all the entries featured in our Facebook group meet a basic standard of draftsmanship and presentation. Because of this, for organizational purposes designs from beginner artists that don't meet the basic quality expectations of our community, will unfortunately not be approved in the group. Also, designs that intentionally don't try to ''push the envelope'' (stick figures, for example), designs that are too abstract or overly minimalistic, or in which the subject of the drawing hasn't been properly researched, will not be accepted. ArtStation does provide some learning materials, but the best use of it is simply to discover great artists to study and references as you develop your style.

In addition, you get to determine your character’s ‘Lifepath’ (basically their backstory) and assign them attribute points, core competencies, and natural aptitude for a tailored gameplay experience. It features several presets which can be further customized using a combination of sliders and more precise customization boxes that provide some flexibility. However, before long, fresh skins, helmets, armor attachments, capes, and other decorations are introduced, each with their own unique color slots and choices for hue and energy emissions. Our first recommendation should come as no surprise considering how important customization is in The Sims series, allowing players to truly express themselves. His iconic hairstyle and outfit from Resident Evil 4 are there at your fingertips, after all. The amusing aspect, however, is that it’s up to you who should cosplay as the daring government agent.

The artists of our community were invited to design their unique vision of an Alebrije creature. Our fifty-second Character Design Challenge started on the 7th of April 2019, the deadline was the 2nd of May 2019. The artists of our community were invited to design their unique vision of a Kabuki performer.

Posts should go on the top of the group wall only when there's a genuine interaction with them and, since the group has thousands of members, we need to remind you that maintaining correct behaviour is essential to be part of this community. The members of the CDChallenge are luckily very touchy about this issue and they have the ability to flag to us anyone who attempts to do this in the group. The Character Design Challenge can be a valuable training ground for those willing to improve their skills, especially the ones who are taking their first steps toward an art career. Repeated attempts at posting artwork that fails to comply with the rules will be considered SPAM, and the member will be banned permanently, so PLEASE be extremely careful. The Fan-Art/Re-Design Challenges are special CDChallenges dedicated to an existing work of fiction.

Joining us on Patreon will also give you 5 EXTRA DAYS to prepare and submit your entry for the contest. Don’t worry, you should simply submit your work via Instagram by including the hashtag for the current challenge, and tagging the IG page of the community ( @characterdesignchallenge ) in your post. By doing so you will successfully register your entry for the contest (if posted within the deadline). Occasionally we send direct notifications on Facebook to let you know if your work wasn’t accepted in the group. Unfortunately, for organizational reasons (and due to the high number of daily entries), we can't notify each artist, so if your design doesn't get approved, please double-check the Rules of the Challenge HERE.

These are particularly useful when trying to get a sense of how another creator might design your OCs. Plus, they are a great way to build a gallery of reference images of your original characters, in other styles and approaches. This is not only a great character design website, it is also a character designer’s website. Hong Ly has worked for Riot Games, Naughty Dog, and more, and put together the site to share the very same resources they use as they work. For one, use this site for the sheer amount of valuable image references, collected by someone with an eye for what a good character artist needs. The resources are valuable and cover so many aspects of design, such as silhouettes and shapes.

The Special Guest Juror's Choice is an artwork selected directly by a veteran artist who is occasionally invited by our team to choose his/her favourite design as a winner for the Character Design Challenge. If you wish to know the names of all the artists who have kindly accepted our invitation in the past, please visit the page dedicated to the past themes and jurors HERE. As a fan of both indie and triple-A games, Justin finds joy in discovering and sharing hidden gems with other passionate gamers. In addition to reporting on the latest and greatest titles, he manages GamingScan’s social media channels.

Get free tutorials, tips, motivational articles, news and resources delivered to your inbox. In this interview,  Raphaëlle Manière and Thomas Chamberlain – Keen share how they created the beautiful submissions that earned them 1st and 2nd place. Needless to say, remember that even with the best intentions, the Standard of Draftsmanship (see a few paragraphs above) also comes into play, so don’t forget that an effort must be made also in that department. Please make sure to post only your design for the challenge in the group, nothing more. Behaving in a proper and polite way is an essential requirement if you want to be part of it, so please play nice.

Every day we invite hundreds of our followers to follow and visit the CDChallenge group where the members can share the links to their websites and online stores. The group is one of the largest on Facebook, with thousands of members and hundreds of new artists joining us daily. Galleries, tutorials, interviews, reviews and animated shorts for your daily dose of inspiration! Discover the most gifted and influential artists working in animation, comics and illustration, today.

For example, the tremendous visual library is an invaluable resource for guides of all sorts, in addition to inspiration. Like a few other video resources included on this list, the tutorials offered on their channel can be quite helpful in understanding the character design process on a technical level. These videos are nice, bite-sized lessons that you can watch on a break or before you start your next character design project and make for a good way to “warm up” before you draw anything. CharacterHub’s variety of features are all very useful for creators looking for character design websites. Being able to store, update, and roleplay as your characters allows you to get into their heads and develop them further.

There are incredible character designers who put up their portfolios that are well worth studying. The fact that so many of them can be found on one website is a huge advantage to anyone looking to build up their character design skills. Each of them explores 6 principles of design through the examples offered by some of the artworks submitted for our contest, in the past. Watching this short series is a great way to learn how to deliver, and how to receive constructive critique in the Character Design Challenge community. We understand that this rule might be perceived as impolite, but it aims to incentivize all the participants to grow as artists and submit only their best designs for the monthly challenges.
